Chapter 2

Chapter 2

But just as I took a few steps, intense pain overwhelmed me, and I blacked out.

When I came to, I had no idea how much time had passed. My consciousness was still foggy, but I vaguely heard voices saying, “We really can’t wait any longer. Without the kidney, the patient is doomed. Contact the family and discuss it quickly.”

Family? I thought long and hard.

This was the last chance, truly the last chance.

I dialed that familiar number, waiting through a long, drawn-out tone.

“Hello, who is this?” A woman’s voice answered.

“Is Jakob there?” I didn't question why she answered the call.

Recognizing my voice, Caroline responded with a flirtatious tone, “Oh, Aleah, Jake’s in the shower. If you’re looking for him…”

I hung up, tapping a few buttons on the screen.

“Tia, please come and handle my body.”

No miracle occurred. I had a sudden onset of illness, and despite efforts, I didn’t survive.

As the blurry halo began to sharpen, I realized I was floating in mid-air, my body semi-transparent.

Looking down, I saw doctors still desperately working on my lifeless body.

Sorry for the trouble. Thank you for your efforts.

In the moment they confirmed my death, my dear friend Tiana was sobbing uncontrollably at my bedside.

Don’t cry, it’s so unflattering. I knelt in the void, gently cupping her face, trying to wipe away her tears.

Suddenly, a strange force seemed to pull me away.

When I regained my balance, I found myself in a very familiar place—my home with Jakob.

But it was different. The room was filled with flowers and gifts, like a proposal scene.

The atmosphere was lively, with many familiar faces in the crowd, including some of my former business partners.

But at that moment, they were celebrating Caroline’s birthday with Jakob.

The two people at the center of the crowd wore sweet smiles, everything perfectly arranged.

In a corner of the sofa, Jakob’s phone buzzed with Tiana’s name flashing on the screen before it eventually faded in the midst of the laughter.

Just like my life.

“Jakob! Why isn’t Aleah here?” someone in the crowd called out, and the air instantly fell silent.
