I usually wasn't someone who would meet up with a stranger at an abandoned warehouse but I was so desperate that without thinking, I threw on a pair of dark jeans, a plain top and a baseball cap pulled low. I stepped out of the house and hopped onto my power bike before riding off at full speed.
The road was steep and I had to be very careful so as not to get into an accident, on arriving at the warehouse, I spotted a red Lamborghini parked in a bush. It seemed like the driver was trying to hide it, but he or she did a terrible job.
I took slow and cautious steps into the warehouse which seemed empty on entering. I scanned the warehouse, looking for any sign of a person but it seemed empty. I had two assumptions, either I was tricked by Theresa or whoever called me. They were waiting to confirm that I had come alone.
I received another text telling me to move three steps back and turn around, I hesitantly obeyed the text and as soon as I turned around, I was greeted with the sight of a handsome man.
"Who are you?" I asked, I couldn't get a good look at his face as he stood so far off, all I could see was someone, probably a man leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Did you call me here to stare at you lean against the wall?" I asked with an eye roll, I heard him scoff before finally moving out of the darkness and I got to see that my mystery person was Christopher Nolan, a shady businessman that was no different from Alessio D'Amelio.
I had tried to investigate him in the past but couldn't find anything that proved that he was a drug dealer but I was just so sure that he was. No one knew anything about him or how he started his business, just like Amelio, he just blew up out of the blue.
"Is this a joke?" I asked with a scoff, I found it ridiculous that the person who was offering me a big story to cover was a suspected drug smuggler.
"I know what you're thinking but before you jump to conclusions, hear me out," he said and stopped me from leaving. I was a little hesitant to stay as I was determined to get a big story.
"I have a big story for you, a story that can give your career the boost it so badly needs" I scoffed at his choice of words, he didn't need to rub the fact that my career was going down the drain in my face.
"Get to the point!" I snapped tired of standing already.
"Take a chill pill, what I was trying to say is I have some dirt on a popular businessman that I know you will do a great job exposing," he said. My interest was peeked and I found myself paying keen attention to what he was saying.
He noticed that he had managed to grab my attention and continued, now with a smile on his face.
"Are you interested?" He asked, "Of course, I am, who are we talking about in particular?" I asked, anxious to know who it was that Christopher was keen on exposing.
"It's Alessio D'Amelio" he replied and my eyes almost popped out of their sockets.
Was he really serious? He expected me to go after Alessio D'Amelio, the most feared man who has a history of allegedly eliminating reporters who tried to carry out investigations about him?
"I'm not doing it" I stated firmly, only a crazy person would agree to cover a story on Alessio D'Amelio.
"Are you sure?" He asked with a strange grin that should have sent shivers down my spine but I had informed Sadie about where I was going before I left home and asked her to call the cop if she didn't hear from me in thirty minutes. Usually, any normal friend would have advised me not to meet up with a stranger at an abandoned warehouse but Sadie wasn't a normal friend.
"I'm sure, and don't ever call or text me again" I snapped and spun around to leave, I was already at the exit when all of a sudden, he said, "Sure, I knew Theresa was a better choice". I stopped in my tracks and turned around to see him standing there with the same stupid grin on his face.
"What did you say?" I asked to confirm that I had heard him right, "I said I should have called Theresa instead, I'm sure that she would love to cover the story and steal your spot as the number 1 reporter in the country" he replied.
I didn't know much about Christopher, but I was sure by the way he spoke that he knew a whole lot about me. He had spent his time researching about me, the time he could have spent investigating Alessio, which led me to wonder why he wanted me to expose Alessio so badly.
"What's in it for you?" I asked with a raised brow, there was no way he could be giving out such valid information for free.
"You're a really smart one, aren't you?" He chuckled but it was a dry one, barely even sounded like a chuckle, more like a cough. "He's my greatest rival and I've been enemies with him since we were little, the joy of seeing his downfall is enough for me," he said, I shot him a shocked stare, he could sell whatever evidence he had to a news agency for million but he's giving it to me for free in the name of revenge? I wasn't buying it. Never!
"Ok, but you could still sell it and get your revenge at the same time" I stated, a long and awkward silence ensued.
He seemed to be trying to come up with another lie but gave up and said, "Look, I want to make a trade with you" he said, more serious than before.
"What, kind of trade is that?" I asked and crossed my hands on my chest.
"I will give you this evidence and get your reputation back but in return, you will shield my reputation from the public" he replied.
"I'm not following."
"I need you to write good reports about me, clear my name as a drug smuggler, and make everyone love me".
"How sure are you that the public will believe that? You're a shady person" I asked earning a glare from him.
"Do you not realize the power you wield?" He asked if I was some kind of supernatural god.
"You are the voice of the people, they will believe anything and everything you tell them" he replied, I couldn't help but agree with him. People believed every word that came out of my mouth but I wasn't a fan of spreading fake news, If I didn't do it, Theresa would do it and my reputation would be over. I was lost in deep thought, contemplating whether to accept his offer or not.
"So are you in? Or do I have to call your sister?"
