Chapter 5: Clara
One month later :
I smooth down the front of my tailored emerald blazer, the silk lining sliding smoothly against my skin. The woman looking back at me from the full-length mirror is unrecognizable. Her hair is cut into a sleek, sharp bob, her makeup is flawless, and her eyes carry a predator-like focus.
The tired, desperate Clara who scrubbed toilets for twelve dollars an hour is gone. Anastasia Vancouve has taken her place.
"The papers are ready for your signature, Miss Vancouve," Harrison says, stepping into my private office at the Vancouve Conglomerate headquarters. He places a thick leather folder on the glass desk.
"Has the transfer been completed?" I ask, turning away from the mirror. I sit behind the desk, picking up a heavy fountain pen. My hands are healed now, the blisters replaced by a pristine manicure.
"Yes," Harrison replies, a professional smile touching his lips. "Using the funds your father allocated to your personal account, we have quietly bought up forty-nine percent of the outstanding high-interest corporate debt of the Von Group. They were desperate for liquidity to finalize their tech merger. They have no idea it was a Vancouve shell company that acquired their liabilities."
I open the folder, looking at Adrian's elegant signature at the bottom of the original loan contracts. For five years, he used his signature to threaten my daughter's life. Now, his signature belongs to me.
"What is the status of their tech merger?" I ask, signing my new name, Anastasia Vancouve, in bold, sweeping strokes at the bottom of the acquisition documents.
"It's hanging by a thread," Harrison explains. "Adrian is relying on the merger to stabilize his family's bleeding assets. But there is a complication you should see. While auditing the Von Group's historical archives to finalize the debt purchase, my team uncovered a restricted file from twenty-three years ago."
I freeze, the pen hovering over the paper. "Twenty-three years ago? The year I was kidnapped?"
"Yes," Harrison says, his voice dropping into a serious tone. He slides a yellowed, digitized document across the desk. "Look at the financial transactions. Two weeks before you were taken from that playground, the Von Group was facing total bankruptcy. But three days after your disappearance, an anonymous offshore account deposited ten million dollars into their corporate treasury. The signature authorizing the reception of those funds belonged to Adrian’s father."
My chest tightens.
Adrian’s family didn't just stumble upon me when Adrian met me in college. They didn't just marry me because Adrian wanted a docile, low-profile wife to parade in front of the cameras. They knew who I was all along. They knew I was the lost Vancouve heiress. They used my childhood kidnapping to save their company decades ago, and then they kept tabs on me, ensuring Adrian would reel me back into their family cage to eventually leech off my father's trillion-dollar empire when the time was right.
A boiling rage erupts in my veins, hotter and more dangerous than anything I have ever felt before. They stole my childhood, they tortured my mother until she died of a broken heart, they let me live in poverty, and then they abused me under the guise of charity.
"They are going to pay for every single second," I whisper, my knuckles turning white as I grip the edge of the desk. "Every single second."
"What is your first command, Miss Vancouve?" Harrison asks, bowing his head.
"Call the tech conglomerate handling the merger with the Von Group," I say. "Tell them the Vancouve family is pulling all investment protection from the Von Group effective immediately. If they proceed with Adrian, we will blackball their products from every Vancouve-owned market in Europe and Asia."
"Consider it done," Harrison replies, turning on his heel and exiting the office.
I stand up, walking over to the private elevator that leads directly to the basement garage. It is time to see my husband.
An hour later, I step out of my private black towncar outside the grand, limestone entrance of the city’s premier financial club. Adrian is hosting a private celebratory dinner with his board members, unaware that the floor beneath his feet has already turned to ash. My personal security detail, four massive men in flawless dark suits, step into formation behind me as I walk through the glass doors.
The receptionist tries to stop me, her face pale. "Ma'am, this is a private event for the Von Group—"
"I am the Von Group's largest creditor," I cut her off, my voice echoing through the quiet lobby. "Get out of my way."
My security forces the double doors open, and I walk straight into the private dining hall.
The room is filled with laughter, the clinking of crystal glasses, and the smell of expensive steak. Adrian is standing at the head of the long table, a glass of champagne in his hand, laughing at something his father just said. Vivian is seated directly to his right, wearing a low-cut dress, a smug smile on her face.
The laughter dies instantly the moment the doors slam open.
Adrian turns, his brow furrowing in deep annoyance as he looks at the intrusion. But as his dark eyes lock onto me, his face undergoes a violent transformation. His jaw slacks, his champagne glass trembling slightly in his hand. He looks at my emerald blazer, my sharp haircut, and the elite security team flanking me.
"Clara?" he stammers, his voice cracking in front of his entire board. "What... what is the meaning of this? How did you get in here? And what are you wearing?"
I walk forward, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor, stopping at the opposite end of the long table. I look at him, my expression deadpan.
"My name is Anastasia Vancouve, Adrian," I say, my voice smooth, carrying perfectly across the silent room. "And I am here to collect my debt."
Adrian’s father stands up, his face purple with rage. "What is this nonsense? Security! Get this crazy woman out of our—"
Before his father can finish, Adrian’s personal assistant, Vivian, suddenly stands up. She looks at me, a tight, calculated smirk on her lips. She pulls a flash drive from her clutch and sets it on the table.
"The internal corporate tax files you requested, Miss Vancouve," Vivian says, her voice loud and clear. She turns to Adrian, her eyes full of betrayal. "I'm sorry, Adrian. The Von Group is a sinking ship, and I don't stay on sinking ships. Your family’s company is completely bankrupt."
Adrian stares at Vivian, blindsided. "Vivian? You... you betrayed me?"
"You used me to try and secure a tech merger, Adrian," Vivian sneers, stepping away from the table. "Did you really think I loved you? I work for whoever holds the real power. And right now, you are nothing."
Adrian stumbles back against his chair, his face losing all its color. He looks at the flash drive, then looks back at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror, confusion, and bubbling arrogance. He rounds the table, rushing toward me, trying to corner me against the wall just like he used to do in his office.
My security team moves instantly, stepping in front of me like a swall, forcing Adrian to a harsh stop three feet away.
"You think you can ruin me, Clara?" Adrian screams, his old arrogance flaring through his panic as he tries to glare at me through the shoulders of my bodyguards. "I am the father of your child! You are nothing without me! You cannot destroy my family legacy!"
I step around my security guard, walking up until I am inches away from his face. I look at him, as I pull a folded piece of paper from my blazer pocket and slide it into his tuxedo pocket.
"Take a look at the foreclosure papers, Adrian," I whisper, my voice sending a visible shiver down his spine. "I don't just own your company; I own your house. I own the cars you drive, the suits you wear, and the air you breathe. Let's see how long you survive without my signature."
