I sat in the driver’s seat, unmoving. The engine ticked softly beneath me, but I felt frozen. I had rehearsed a dozen versions of what to say. None of them sounded right. Not after I left her like that.
Half an hour passed before I finally stepped out of the car. My palms were damp. My suit felt too tight. And when I walked past the maids, they all turned—startled, peering at my disheveled state.
