Chapter Two

Avery’s POV

I woke to the sound of rain still hammering the windows and the low, distant roll of thunder that refused to leave.

For a moment the unfamiliar ceiling confused me. Then the night returned in pieces the dead car, the iron gate, the brief brush of Kane’s fingers against my neck, the way my body had reacted before I could stop it. I sat up slowly. The oversized shirt still smelled faintly of clean soap and something warmer that belonged to him. Outside, the world remained a blurred sheet of water. Whatever fragile hope I had of leaving at first light dissolved with the continued storm....
