I cried and shook my head. I knew that once I did not stand in front of my mother, my father would surely kill her.

Maybe my mother just wanted him to kill her. She did not want to live.

"Get out of the way, Austin!" my mother shouted.

"NO!"

My mother was not a competent Luna, or a competent mother, or a competent wife, but I could not lose her.

My mother was a bitch, my father was a tyrant, my brother was an alcoholic. I hated each and every one of them, but I could not lose any of them....
