“I'm back,” Ashford announced as he strolled into the manor, a wide grin on his face.

I looked past his shoulder and gestured at the two guards positioned at the door. “Why are they here?”

Ashford hung his jacket over the chair before settling into it. “My brother insisted… For our protection."

“Against what exactly?” I frowned.

“I don't know, just protection, I guess." He shrugged.

I eyed him suspiciously but decided not to ask anymore. Instead, I turned back to my note and continued writing.
