I nodded, even though Scarlett couldn’t see. “I brought some food and toys for the two of them. Maybe that will help ease things a little.”

Scarlett’s voice took a deep breath on the other end of the line. “That’s great, Logan. But I’m not sure you can give them to Emma right away. She’s in a complicated situation. Maybe you should give her some space.”

“I know,” I said in a low voice. I’d been thinking about that since the trip here. “I’m afraid to disturb her. I don’t want to make things more difficult.”

“You brought some food and toys, right?” Scarlett sounded more relaxed now....
