I knelt down beside his bed and held both of his cheeks. “Adolf, listen, honey. Mommy just wants to take care of the payment so we can go home quickly,” I said softly, trying to calm his anxious heart. “Later we can play with Adney, Ainsley, and Allonza at home. You want to go home quickly, right?”

He bit his lower lip, looking hesitant for a moment. His eyes blinked a few times before he finally nodded slowly, although he still didn’t let go of my hand. “But you won’t be long, right?” he asked hopefully.

I smiled and kissed his forehead which was still a little warm....
