My head throbbed where my skull met anything else. I couldn’t tell up from down. Left from right. Or… ‘Where am I?’

The world narrowed to the antiseptic smell of the hospital, to the bright, indifferent lights as I forced my eyes open, and to the steady beeping of machines that kept time with my panic.

Men in scrubs moved with efficient purpose. Someone wrapped a blanket around my shoulders. Another pressed a cool pad to my forehead. “Calm down ma'am. You're at the hospital.”
