His gaze softened as he reached down, his hand resting lightly on my stomach. “Here we are,” he echoed. “And for what it’s worth, I’m glad the hospital made that mistake. If it hadn’t happened, you wouldn’t be here. We wouldn’t be here.”

The honesty in his tone startled me. It stripped me bare. My laugh came softer this time, breaking into something fragile and warm.
