“Please don’t tell my mom, Dr. Voss. I swear I’ll fix this. I’ll do anything, just don’t call her.”

My voice shook so bad it came out tiny and broken, like I was some scared little girl instead of a twenty-year-old college student who was supposed to have her shit together. 

I stood right in front of his big wooden desk, twisting the hem of my short pleated skirt between my fingers until the fabric started to wrinkle. 

My heart slammed against my ribs so hard I could feel it in my throat.
