Becket Knox sat in his locker room listening to music on his phone. His dark curly hair was wet to keep him cool during his upcoming match. He was a tall man with a hard fit physique, light blue eyes, with a thousand-watt smile that made every woman take notice. In his early thirties, he was at the peak of his career. He lived, ate, and breathed fitness and wrestling. His whole life he wanted to be in the ring and he had worked hard to get where he was, on the top of the roster and living his best life. Even the owner of the company had taken notice of how well Becket knew the industry inside and out. He was a leader and a go-getter and it showed.
As Becket prepared for the nights' event in walked Eric Quinn, smiling like a madman. The distinguished older man was up to no good and Becket knew it. Becket just rolled his eyes and continued to get himself ring-ready. Turning down the music he allowed the man to talk while trying his best to get in the right headspace for his match.
"Hey, Beck. Do you like Nova's music? She's my daughter, you know."
"I know. She's good. Her new song is more heavy metal than some of her other recent stuff. I'm not much into female rock bands, but they're the best. Eric, I know you didn't come here to talk about music. You want something. What is it?" Becket asked as he laced up his ring boots.
"Just checking in on our face of the company. Paying extra attention to the champ."
"Yeah, sure. That's bullshit. Quinn, out with it. What are you up to? I have to get ready for my match. Jake and the boys will be back in a few minutes to head to the ring and I don't have time for your ass-kissing. We have a big night tonight."
Becket knew Eric was up to something. He had been sucking up for days and laying on the charm thick.
"All right, fine. So, there is this new girl coming in," Eric said easing into it.
"I heard. Jake told me about it. He said she's some spoiled little rich girl whose daddy begged Holt to give her a shot. Money talks, though. I personally think it's a load of crap. We work our asses off and this girl gets the royal treatment. She'll be injured in a week and crying to go home." Ignoring him, Becket adjusted himself on the bench in his locker room and started wrapping his hands with sports tape.
"Word got around fast, huh? For your information, smart ass, it's Nova." Eric seemed annoyed at Becket's comments. His daughter wasn't just an average newbie and had skills in the ring.
Becket looked up, laughing hysterically until he saw Eric's serious face. "Oh? You're not joking? So rocker chick thinks she's a wrestler now? From what I've heard, she's a little diva behind the scenes. What did she do? Throw a little temper tantrum to daddy, and you said she can come to be a pro wrestler. She needs to stick to music and leave the hard stuff to the professionals."
"Becket, don't be a jerk. You knew her back in the WEC days. Nova loved wrestling. She's formally trained and did dark matches when we needed her. You didn't see how hard Nova worked after you left to come here. She didn't get any televised matches, but she still has experience. Nova started training when she was about 13 or 14 years old. She used to be good and is a hard worker. She needs work in the ring and is a little rusty, but I really think she can do this. Holt says you have the last say." Eric pulled up a folding chair, looking into Becket's eyes.
Becket looked over at Eric, realizing what he wanted from the look in his eyes. Turning away, he shook his head in disapproval. "Oh, hell no. I'm not going to let her be a part of Colossus. Everyone in this faction works their asses off. We don't need some rookie wannabe slowing us down."
Eric stood up quickly, getting angry at Beckets' attitude, as the chair he was sitting in screeched across the slick floor. "She's no wannabe, Beck! She's my daughter. Listen, it's good for business. A rock star turned wrestler. Think about the future of the company. Think of the money it will bring in and the fame attached to it. Not to mention bring Colossus to the mainstream media from her connections alone. She's a huge celebrity and brings her fan base with a whole other industry to the mix; acting and music. It's a good opportunity for the company, and your team, in more ways than one."
Becket crossed his arms over his chest and turned back to Eric. "I get that; I do. It would be a good promotion for the company. The fact remains, she's not a full-time wrestler and that's dangerous. I have little respect for her using your pull to get what she wants. Sounds to me like Holt isn't thinking things through completely."
"It's a good opportunity, Beck."
" Am I the only one thinking this through? What about Nova's future of being hurt if she was to get in that ring with someone like Raven, or hurt someone else from her lack of training? What Eric? Did she get bored with playing rockstar? This conversation is over. It's not happening. She'll have to pay her dues like everyone else. Send her to a training camp and then we'll talk."
"Well, I came here to talk this over, but you obviously don't want to be open-minded to something new. I knew you would never go for it. Holt likes the idea of her being with Colossus, so it's done whether or not you like it. You'll just have to figure out how to make it work." Eric stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
Becket just sighed in annoyance and went back to preparing for his match.
Jake, Becket's best friend, came in pointing over his shoulder as Eric stormed down the hall. "What was that about?"
Becket just looked over at his friend, shaking his head. "We have trouble, bro. And you're not going to like it any more than I do."
After the show, Becket went to his boss Holt's office, bursting through the door. "What the hell, Holt! Did you plan to tell Jake and me the real deal about Nova? Or, did you plan to wait until I was in the middle of the ring to send her out to botch a match?"
"Becket, I know you don't like it. This contract with Nova is a huge deal. This will bring big ratings and help talent grow in other avenues of the entertainment industry. You're into rock music and playing guitar, I figured you will have a lot to talk about. Anyway, I've seen her in the ring, and she's been training privately for a while. Nova needs a little more training but she's not bad. I think once she gets back in the ring full time she'll be amazing," Holt stated, trying to convince him.
"Absolutely not. I won't be her babysitter. I know the stories; she's a spoiled brat." Becket paced the room, tapping his thumb on his lip, a clear sign he was becoming irritated.
"It's done. We signed her a few days ago. Nova's making her first appearance here in two weeks. She's in the ring at the training center as we speak. We're going to play this out like she's just a celebrity guest for her first time out. She'll perform her new song and have a short time in the ring. I want to write her into the show quickly so we may have something happen that night for a build to a storyline."
"So, I have no say in this?" Becket huffed.
"Sorry, Becket. Not on this. The writers are already on it. The promotion will start this week. Now go get some rest. That was a good match tonight."
Holt had his mind made up and waved off Becket's concerns.
"This is bullshit."
"One more thing, I want you to train her on the side. She's not going to do anything but take bumps and a few light moves until I know she can handle it. No matches until she's ready, understood? You can be the one to decide when she gets a real match."
"So, basically eye-candy, and drama spots?"
"Funny you should mention that. It's going to be a romantic storyline, eventually, with the two of you."
Holt sat back in his office chair with a huge smirk. He knew that would get Becket stirred up. The man hated romance storylines and Holt always stuck him in the middle of them.
"Fuck! Are you trying to sabotage my career?"
"No, we're making it bigger. I'm sure she's going to be a handful, but she asked to be with Colossus. Specifically, you."
Becket stopped pacing around the room and stared Holt down. "She asked? So let me get this straight? She's a rookie. Just a celebrity getting special treatment, and because the Super Nova asked for it, she gets everything she wants. She gets to be teamed up with the biggest faction in Powerbomb Global just because she asked. The hell with working to get what you want, right Holt. Just run to daddy for his connections and get it handed over to you on a silver fucking platter. This is ridiculous."
"It's just business, so you're going to have to make the best of it. Jake gets it. I talked to him a little earlier because he rushed in here throwing a fit too. He remembers Nova from WEC. He said she was a kid but a damn hard worker and willing to learn. It means big money for us all. I'm sure you'll be able to come around to the idea too once you get used to it."
Becket realized nothing he would say was going to change Holt's mind. As he left the room, he turned back to his boss with a concerned look.
"When this goes to shit, just remember I told you so."
