Elena showed up at noon exactly like Mom said she would.
I heard the car door slam out front and watched through the living room window as she walked up the path carrying a bottle of red wine and that same easy smile she always wore around our house.
Forty-six years old and still moving like she owned every room she stepped into. I opened the door before she could knock.
“Hey, Chloe. Your mom is already gone?”
“Yeah, I left at six this morning. Said the flight was early.”
She stepped inside, set the bottle on the counter, and kicked off her sandals.
