As the car kept on approaching me, I stood in front of the road and shouted, "stop, please stop". As the driver was coming at a very high speed, I could see how he managed to halt the car in an impromptu way in order not to run me over.
I took a deep. breath of life because I thought I was going to be crushed this time around. that was how the car stopped right in front of me and I was shivering with my eyes closed, like someone who already saw the gates of hell. while I was panting like a wild animal chasing its prey, I was sweating out of exhaustion.
The driver came out and yelled at me with a very furious voice, "young lady do you want to die?". still shocked by the act I had just carried out, I was still gasping for air to get myself to be able to answer him.
while he kept on shouting and calling me names, all I could remember was the reason why I had to commit that terrible act that almost cost me my life and I screamed, sir you need to help me please,
That was the only way I could get help, no ambulance could come at that time. rescue him added to the fact that my phone's battery had died how could I even have called the hospital for them to send an ambulance? I thought to myself while looking at the man with so much fear.
The man saw the fright in my eyes and the bloodstains on my clothes and told me to calm down and explain to him what the matter was and why I had bloodstains on my clothes.
All I could say was that he should come with me right away and that we need to hurry and go fast. but the driver insisted that he wasn't moving an inch with me till I had explained to him what was the matter.
Then I told him that a man was lying unconscious over there in the dark almost half dead and needed our help.
The driver asked me where? I pointed out to a dark corner of the street shivering like someone who was been stroke by an angel of death.
the driver said he couldn't see anything, but I told him that we didn't have much time left because the man had been lying there for quite some time and I couldn't do anything to help him since I was alone.
I couldn't transport him because I had no car and I couldn't find anyone to help that's why I am on the street looking for help.
the driver asked me if I knew the person or if I am just making up stories to attack him in the dark. but I kept on pleading with him to please come with me and see for himself.
then he decided to come with me to see what I was talking about and as we were walking towards the area where I had left him the driver saw him there unconscious, and he asked me what I had done to the man. I exclaimed," me"?
I cried out in anguish and said" I did not do anything to the man, I was on my way back from work and I saw this man in this state" I explain the asked me what the man's name was I said I don't know because the man didn't have any address or cell phone on him.
The driver now asked, how do we identify him? All I could say was that the man needs urgent medical attention.
the driver asked me to help him carry the man to his car to get him to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. so we battled to get him up his feet to the car so that he could be taken to the hospital.
As I entered the car and laid his head on my lap, I felt like I have known this man for a long time. I felt like I have to save him from dying and that he didn't deserve what had happened to him.
As the car kept moving all I could do was to stress the driver to drive faster because I felt like we were losing the man. the car was moving quickly and my eyes were searching all the corners of the streets to find a hospital that we could take him there quickly.
we drove for some time and the car started jerking I got scared and I asked the driver, what is happening? and the car eventually stopped on the way.
The driver went out of the car to check on what was wrong with the engine. he opens the bonnet and smoke were making its way out and he turned and told me that the car had ceased to function and that we had to get a mechanic to repair the car.
I screamed, " what?"
I burst into tears as I asked him, "what about the man, how do I take him to the hospital?" The driver had no idea as he just looked at me dumbfounded and with pity.
I was asking him so many questions that I don't even remember but all I needed deep down in me was for the man to be brought to a hospital as soon as possible if not he will lose his life.
As the driver was trying his best to arrange the car while contacting his mechanic, I checked on the man in the car and when I looked at him, his face was becoming pale and his body was turning white from losing so much blood.
I panicked and yelled at the driver again in fear," what do we do now, the man has to be saved". The driver told me to calm down that everything will be alright.
Did I ask how? the man has lost so much blood and he is dying we need to take him to the hospital us not he will die.
The driver picked up the phone and he was calling someone but I honestly didn't care who it was that he was calling because my focus at that time was to save that stranger lying there in his care helpless.
while I was deep in thought I could already hear the birds chiming on the trees, then suddenly I could see a flashlight from a car approaching our direction.
I immediately jumped on the road and shouted "help us, help us", and the car stopped.
I explained to the driver that I have someone who is dying in the car, he needs to be taken to the hospital quickly. he has lost so much blood already and the car just broke down. please help us sir I am begging you.
I continued, I asked the driver if he knew if any hospital around and how long it could take for it to reach there. He and he replied, "there is a hospital not too far from her, I think it's some minute's drive".
I answered with a loud voice," what are we waiting for, let's take him there immediately". that I need help to take a dying man to the hospital and the conductor accepted to help us and said he knows a nearby hospital that is just 20minutes away.
I pleaded with him to hurry. so we had to transfer the man to the new car and drove off to the hospital.
As he was driving, I could already see the brightness of the day appearing and darkness was slowly vanishing giving way to a beautiful start of a new day. But u knew for sure that the day won't be a good one for me.
I could see us approaching the hospital and I was talking to the man getting cold on my lap. I couldn't wait for the conductor to reach the care of the hospital when I started crying out for assistance to get him out of the car. when the nurses came out to help take him out of the car, I stood there watching how they were rescuing him from giving up the ghost.
I saw a lady coming out crying bitterly like there was no hope for her, I wonder why she was in that state but I couldn't go close to her to ask.
I got carried away with the environment of the hospital and its traumatic experiences. As they brought a stretch to lift him I followed behind looking at him praying in my heart so that he could wake up.
The hospital was filled with so many patients, long white endless hallways. its smell is antiseptic, a little bitter, with undertones of artificial scent contained in soap and cleaners.
Everything I could hear was echoes and the cries of newborn babies I could hear the sounds of beeps and blips making their way around the floor. But eventually, those bleeps and blips vanish into the background.
Also, an endless line of patients waiting for their turns to receive a consultation with their desired doctors.
when I glanced by the side, I could notice the pregnant ladies waiting for their antenatal sessions and the old people and the sick.
I was still in my thoughts and analysis when I heard a voice from behind saying, "Ma'am, are you a family member to the patient?" I was looking at the person in confusion when I heard the person asking me the same question again, " ma'am did you come with the patient?"
That's when I noticed a nurse was standing in front of me. I answered "yes" I came with the patient.
The nurse asked me again, "what is his name?" I was completely lost I hesitated and started stammering because I find to know what to say nor what to tell them.
I mustered the courage and told the nurse that, I saw the man on my way back from work almost lifeless and I decided to help him out when I checked I noticed he didn't have anything to identify him with which made things very difficult.
I couldn't contact any of his family members nor friends because I couldn't find any address or cellphone on him.
Then the nurse told me that he is in a crucial condition because he lost a lot of blood and also there was another problem.
Immediately she said that I almost blacked out. I was thinking all sorts of things in my head, I was feeling that the worst will happen.
I felt afraid, and I asked myself so many questions like, "What if the man dies? what will be my explanation?" what will I say happened to him? I don't even know his name, I don't know his address.
what if he doesn't make it out of the hospital?.
Then I yelled," why on earth is the doctor not here?" How could he not be on during at this time of the morning, what could he be doing at his house instead of saving people's lives.
what kind of a doctor is he? call him to come here right away he has a patient who needs urgent attention. Is he the only doctor who can take care of the patient? He will die if he's not attended to immediately.
She immediately told me to calm down that they were to get another doctor to take the patient into the operating room to perform the surgery at once. Just calm down ma'am everything will be fine.
I looked at her and asked to plug my phone on a charge which she showed me to the reception.
I instantly went there at a corner where I won't be disturbed by anyone passing through, to plug my phone to be able to get it on and call my friend and ask them to join me at the hospital, because alone, I could not endure another episode of bad news from the nurse or doctor in charge.
