He turned to me slowly as we reached his bedroom. "You know," he said, his voice low and husky, "I could easily fire you for what you just did."

I felt a surge of panic at his words. Losing this job would be disastrous for me. But before I could respond, he continued,

"But I won't."

The relief that washed over me was almost overwhelming.
