"And if I leave today?" I thought about leaving the hospital even though my whole body was sore.
"There won't be any additional cost, but it's not advisable for you to be discharged right now. You need to stay here for a few days to recover," the nurse insisted.
"I want to leave. Who wouldn't? But I don't have any money right now, and whatever I have left is for my daughter's milk," I explained, and the nurse looked concerned.
"I'm sorry, Miss Chloe. I wish I could help, but I'm also tight on cash," she said.
"It's okay. Can you help me get discharged right away? I just need to pack my things," I asked her, and she nodded.
Once the nurse left, the other women in the ward looked at me with sympathy. They felt sorry for me, but they couldn't help. We were all struggling financially, which is why we chose Saint Anthony's Hospital.
I smiled at them, trying to move comfortably. A few minutes later, I was ready to leave. I just had to wait for the nurse to come back. I sighed as I looked at my sleeping daughter. I felt bad for her, but there was nothing I could do at the moment. I was broke and had no one to help me.
When the nurse returned, I composed myself and smiled at her. She was kind enough to carry some of my things to my old truck. "Thank you," I said once we were in front of the truck. She loaded my things into the front seat. Since I knew I would be spending a lot of time in my truck, I had saved some money to buy a car seat for my child. The nurse helped me climb up, and she even asked if I could drive in my condition.
I assured her that I could, and she gave me a small piece of paper with some writing on it. "What's this?" I asked politely.
"It's a place for single mothers like you, ma'am. You can go there and see if they have a spot available for you. I'm sorry, that's all I can do to help," she apologized.
I bit my lip as I read the address and memorized it in case I misplaced the paper. "Thank you so much for being kind. I have to go now," I said, and she waved goodbye.
Since the address wasn't far from the hospital, I decided to go there right away. It was only a few blocks away, and as I drove, I prayed that they would accept me and let me stay temporarily until I could find an affordable rental home. The property was gated, and I could see people inside from my truck. One of the women noticed my truck and came out.
"Are you waiting for someone?" she asked, but I knew she was checking on me. I smiled at her, and her expression softened.
"I heard that this place accepts single mothers," I told her, and she nodded. Excitement rushed through me that I had finally found a place for myself and my daughter.
"Are you already a mom?"
"Yes, I just gave birth yesterday, but I couldn't stay longer in the hospital because of my financial situation."
"Where's your baby?"
"Right beside me," I answered.
"What? Oh my God," she exclaimed, then called some of the women inside and helped me get down from the truck. I endured the soreness and tried to walk normally. They invited me to have snacks with them and even helped me carry my baby. I appreciated their help a lot.
One of the women mentioned that she might be able to convince their governess to allow an additional person, and she kindly offered her bed for the time being. I hoped that I would finally have a place to stay.
"I'm Chloe Anderson," I introduced myself to the woman because she seemed kind.
"Anderson? How are you related to Roger Anderson?"
"He's my father," I replied without hesitation, and she nodded. Even though she didn't ask for details, I knew she had an idea of what had happened to me.
"You became a rogue."
"He kicked me out and took away my inheritance."
"Some men can be harsh, darling. We didn't plan to be rogues, but we ended up as ones. My mate rejected me because I'm an omega and kicked me out of the pack. Luckily, Claybourne has a place for us. Oh, she's coming back!"
My eyes lit up with hope when the woman went to talk to the governess about me returning. The governess's expression was hard to read. Still, I hoped for the best. I smiled at her, but she looked at me with sadness in her eyes. At that moment, I understood and nodded.
"I'm sorry, but the place is full," she said.
It was disappointing to hear, and I felt like I had lost all hope of finding a safe place for me and my daughter. "Don't feel bad about it. It's not your fault. I'll just look for another place then," I replied.
"Hmm, Chloe, can you wait for me before you leave? I have something to give you," the woman who claimed to be an omega said. I nodded, and they all went back inside the house.
I patiently waited for them. My baby stirred in her sleep, and I hummed one of my favorite songs to help her fall asleep again. When I saw them coming out one by one, I was confused as to why they each carried a pack.
"Thank you for the snacks earlier," I said.
"We would love to have you here with us. I'm sorry. I hope you'll come back to see us soon," she said, instructing the others to bring their food packs to the truck. "It's hard to be alone, especially when you're a mother. We packed some food for you and some goodies too. Please stay safe."
I was touched by their actions. Just an hour ago, I didn't know them, but they had shown kindness to me. Tears of joy welled up in my eyes, but I held back from getting too emotional. "Can I have your number? I might be able to buy a phone soon, and then I'll call you. I'm so grateful right now," I said, and they smiled.
"Of course," she replied.
I was incredibly grateful for their kindness and smiled at them before getting back into my truck. Once again, I waved goodbye before starting the engine of my old truck, and a sigh escaped my lips as I drove away.
