The heavy double doors of the Imperial Ballroom didn't just open. They slammed back against the wall with a loud bang that made the glass chandeliers shake.
Every person in the room went completely still. Whispers stopped mid-sentence. People froze with champagne glasses held halfway to their mouths.
Six large men in dark suits walked in first. They moved like trained soldiers, lining up on both sides of the door. Their eyes scanned the room, looking for any sign of trouble. The hotel’s tough security guards took one look at them and instantly dropped to their knees, bowing their heads in pure fear.
Then, a single man walked through the doorway.
Julian Vance.
He moved with a calm, dangerous power. He wore a dark tailored suit that made his broad shoulders look even broader. The moment he entered, the temperature in the room seemed to drop. The air felt cold and heavy.
Gasp after gasp filled the room.
"Is that... is that really Julian Vance?" a rich businessman asked, his voice shaking.
"The head of Vance Global?" a woman whispered, clutching her necklace. "He never comes to party events like this. Never!"
Up on the stage, Liam’s face turned completely white. The smug smile he had been wearing a second ago vanished. His jaw dropped, and his legs started shaking so hard he had to grab the wooden podium just to stay on his feet.
Julian Vance was his uncle. But Julian wasn't just family. He was the supreme leader of the entire Vance family empire. He controlled international banks, shipping lines, and massive companies worth billions. Liam was just a minor relative who survived on the tiny leftovers Julian allowed him to have.
Panic hit Liam like a wave. Forgetting the crowd, the flashing cameras, and his own pride, he scrambled down the stage stairs so fast he almost fell on his face. He ran to the middle of the room and dropped straight to his knees on the hard floor, right at Julian’s shiny black shoes.
"Uncle Julian!" Liam cried out, his voice cracking. "I had no idea you were coming! Please forgive me for not waiting for you at the front gate!"
Chloe rushed down right behind him, dropping to her hands and knees. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She had heard the terrifying stories about Julian Vance. One quick word from this man could destroy her family’s entire business before the night was over.
Liam forced a fake, desperate smile onto his pale face. "Uncle, please! Come up to the main table! I will order the most expensive drink in the building for you right now!"
Julian didn't stop. He didn't even look down.
His cold, dark eyes stared straight ahead, treating Liam like he was completely invisible. He stepped right around Liam's kneeling body without giving him a single glance.
Liam froze on the floor, his face burning hot with humiliation. The news reporters—the same ones Liam had paid to humiliate Evelyn—turned their cameras down and started snapping photos of Liam begging on his knees like a dog.
Julian walked up the stage stairs with slow, steady steps.
The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Nobody dared to breathe. Nobody understood why the most powerful man in the country was walking toward a ruined bride.
Evelyn stood her ground near the middle of the stage. She held the microphone loosely in her hand. Her heart hammered against her chest, but she kept her face calm. She had known Julian was an important corporate leader—the man she had spent the last two nights with in the shadows—but she had no idea he was the legendary, feared head of the Vance empire.
Julian stopped right in front of her. His tall body blocked out the bright stage lights, wrapping her in his shadow.
The icy look on his face softened just a tiny bit as he looked down at her. A strange, dangerous spark flickered deep in his dark eyes.
Down on the floor, Chloe raised her head, a nasty smile spreading across her lips. She whispered to herself, "Evelyn is done for. Julian Vance hates public drama. He's going to destroy her right now."
Liam scrambled up from the floor, wiping the dust off his knees. His eyes lit up with revenge. "Uncle! Ruin her! She lied, she brought shame to our family name, and she ruined this entire party! Put her in her place!"
Julian ignored the noise. To him, the rest of the room didn't exist.
Slowly, he raised his hand. The crowd gasped, expecting him to slap her or order his guards to drag her away. Instead, his long fingers gently reached out and brushed a loose strand of hair away from Evelyn’s cheek. His skin felt warm against her skin.
A massive, shocked gasp echoed through the ballroom. Camera flashes went off like lightning.
Julian bent down close to her ear, his warm breath touching her skin.
"Did you forget your wedding ring at my place, wife?"
