#Chapter7
Plink!
I nodded slowly, staring at the letter in my hands. I badly want to burn it. Surely, Mr Ambrose won't waste his time reading these kinds of letters, will he? He did tell me about giving him letters that are important. Is this important?
Mr Stone looked at me as if he was reading my mind, "If you don't mind me asking, Mr Linton, what would you do with the letter?"
I shrugged, looking up at him from the letter in my hand, "I'll think about it."
Mr Stone smiled before he left. He closed the door behind him, making a soft thud. I went back to my desk and put the letters down. I sighed as I assessed the letter from Miss Higgins. Should I give it? Would Mr Ambrose waste his time reading this?
Plink!
Should I open it to see what's inside? To know if it really is important?
Plink!
But then that would be rude. I shouldn't open any letters at all, for the privacy of my dearest humble employer. And I should respect his privacy under any circumstances.
Plink!
But then how would I know if I should send this to him? Should I just burn it and act like the letter never existed in the first place?
Plink!
I sighed. I looked around the envelope, only to see a neat hand writing at the back below the stamp that says;
With love,
Elizabeth Higgins.
And that's practically just it.
Plink!
I forgot for a moment where I was until I saw my desk filled with unread messages from Mr Ambrose. My eyes went wide as I left the letters. I took one of the messages, read it, and scrambled to find the file. I was mumbling under my breath about getting myself fired as I try to search for file 65XX444 in one of the drawers. The moment I got a hold of it, I heard strong, even footsteps getting near to the my office door connected to Mr Ambrose's office.
I closed my eyes. Even if I prayed to different gods that let it be anyone but Mr Ambrose, it won't work. I don't go to church every Sunday, so I understand if god won't answer my prayers. But at least I'd see him in five minutes. Because Mr Ambrose will surely kill me.
The door opened in an angry thud, revealing Mr Ambrose. He had a straight face as always. His stone cold eyes found my own. I straightened myself as I handed him the file, "Found it," I said.
He took it in one swift motion, "You took your time."
"Would you rather I take yours?"
He narrowed his eyes at me infinitesimally, but after that he said nothing. He looked at my desk, and his eyes landed on the stack of letters I momentarily forgot. I blinked as realization settled in. Before he so much as take a step towards my desk, I beat him to it. I immediately stood in between him and my desk. He eyed me with curiosity as I tried to hide what was behind me.
Why was I hiding the letters again?
Mr Ambrose took a couple of dangerous steps towards me that had me squirming on my feet. "What is it, Mr Linton?"
"What what?"
"I'm not going to repeat myself, Mr Linton," he warned.
I shrugged my shoulders, successfully hiding everything from his line of eyesight, "Then don't."
"Are you toying with me, Mr Linton?"
"I wouldn't dare, sir."
He took two long strides and practically shoved me away. I stumbled a bit as he eyed the scattered letters on my desk. I looked at him as he put the file down and took one letter, particularly the one from Miss Higgins. Adrenaline rushed through me as I lunged at it. I reached out to snatch it from his hands, but his reflexes were fast. He already had his hand up in the air with the letter.
He looked down at me, "What are you doing, Mr Linton?"
"That letter isn't important!" I exclaimed. He always had been adamant about spending his time only on important things. I'm just doing my job. Though I don't think I'm saving his time right now...
"Indeed?" He asks as he looks at the letters on my desk, "Filter the letters. Send the important ones in my office."
I jumped repeatedly as I tried to take the letter from him. However, he was too tall, "That's. What. I'm. Trying. To. Do."
He took a couple of steps away from me so he could freely assess the letter in his hands. At that moment, I knew I was fired. "Elizabeth?" He asks, his face still expressionless, "Elizabeth." He nodded once as if realizing who the sender was.
I watched silently as he tore his gaze away from the letter to look at me.
He nodded on my desk, "Find the files immediately. Then bring the letters. I'll be in my office," he says before going back to his office with the letter in his hand.
"Wait!" I sprinted towards the connecting door of our office to block his path, "That letter," I nodded towards his hands, "Is it important enough?"
"It's from Miss Higgins, of course it is," Mr Ambrose answered as if that's the most obvious thing in the world. Like I should've known the answer for myself.
"It's from Miss Higgins, of course it is," I mimicked him with an impeccably high pitched tone, "That letter is as important as the pink ones!" I pointed at the pink letter he ignored on my desk.
"The pink letters were not important, Mr Linton," his gaze turned colder, if that was even possible.
"Exactly," I pointed out. I reached out to try my luck and get the letter from him, to no avail, "Oh, come on!" I exclaimed, frustrated.
"You seem distressed," he says, cocking his head to the side as he looked down on me.
"Am I?" I deadpan, "I wonder."
"I don't pay you to wonder, Mr Linton," he gave me a hard look as he pushed me away so he could pass through. I huffed as I watched him walk through his office. He added, without turning to look at me, "Now get the files I need, because I feel like diminishing some of my workers."
That got my attention. I turned to look at the drawers, searching for another file that he requested in one of his sweet messages. I mumbled, "You're a son of a bachelor," as I flipped file after file.
Apparently, Mr Ambrose heard. "Respect, Mr Linton!" He says, his voice booming in both our offices. I try to ignore the fact that he didn't close the connecting door of our office.
"You're a son of a bachelor, sir!"
