Joan and I looked at each other when we heard the crunch of snow. Someone was approaching. Frozen and peering intently into the pitch darkness, I confidently held the barrier that protected us from unexpected attacks. Among the bushes and trees it was difficult to see something, but steps and a low growl were clearly heard. Finally, between the branches, I noticed two red dots. A sudden female shriek pierced the silence of the forest.

“I hope it was Terry who was attacked,” laughed her friend.

“Shh,” I hissed, but it was too late.

To my left, a mouth with fangs already appeared. The monster looked like a huge wolf...
