Maya who laid flatly on her back was crying in silence as she listened to everything they said.

I don't believe they were themselves. Perhaps it was Wolf's doing. He wanted Maya to get the truth from them and then start explaining everything later after all he trusted his magic. He may have thought that she would still doubt him if he told her the truth himself.
