Morning arrived without permission.

Sunlight slipped through the gap in the curtains, falling directly onto Giselle’s face. Her eyelids moved slowly before finally opening. Her head felt heavy, her chest rising and falling steadily. For a few seconds, she simply stared at the unfamiliar ceiling before her awareness fully returned.

A soft vibration from the phone on the nightstand startled her.

It vibrated. The screen lit up.

The name on the screen made her heart seem to stop for a moment.
