The morning had started off fine.
More than fine, actually. I had slept well for the first time in days — no dreams of hospital wards or hotel rooms or blindfolds, just a deep, uninterrupted rest that left me waking up feeling lighter than I had in a while. I stretched against the sheets and let myself enjoy the quiet for a moment before reaching for my phone on the nightstand, mostly out of habit more than need.
The screen lit up with a number I didn't recognize.
I stared at it for a second, debating whether to ignore it the way I usually did with unknown numbers....
