Curled up on the cold floor, the ground stained red.
Brilliant fireworks lit up a corner of the sky, witnessing my slow fall.
Struggling to lift my eyes to the dazzling night sky, I remembered last year's birthday, gazing at Jacob's god-like face through the sparklers on the cake.
Jacob had stolen my wish while I was mesmerized by his divine looks.
"My wish is for Gwynne to eat well, drink well, and live forever."
I punched him playfully, laughing, "They say wishes made by anyone other than the birthday person don't come true. It's my turn."
"My wish is for Jacob and the person he loves to be together forever and have many children."
"Oh, then Gwynne better hurry up and give me a child."
"Stop it, you haven't even proposed! Who's going to have your baby!"
Who would die on their birthday?
I would...
Behind me, the noise of the returning criminals grew louder, but I could no longer hear it, slowly closing my eyes.
In my mind, only Jacob's cold eyes saying, "Even if you die, I won't forgive you."
My soul began to leave my body, slowly drifting toward Jacob.
I saw him standing on a rooftop with a drunken Barbara, watching the fireworks.
Barbara, barefoot, walked tiptoed on the platform like a carefree child.
Jacob, worried, his handsome brows furrowed.
"Careful, it's dangerous."
Memories faded away as my gaze refocused on the autopsy table.
The moment Jacob cut open my body, it was too horrible to look at.
My soul turned away, unable to bear the sight.
An assistant gritted his teeth.
"My God, this is monstrous!"
Jacob steadied the scalpel, trying to maintain a calm tone.
"Looks like a professional criminal, almost all evidence has been removed."
Jacob had never worked so quickly, wanting to end it as soon as possible, not wishing to see me any longer.
As he removed his gloves after the work, he glanced at my shattered form.
Telling the assistant, "It's unsightly. Once the report is out, notify the family and have her cremated."
In life, he never wanted to see me again; in death, he wished I would disappear immediately.
Jacob, when you realize the person you treated so cruelly was me, will you still be so calm?
The assistant glanced back at me, eyes filled with pity.
"Her head is missing. I wonder whose daughter, whose wife, or whose mother she was?"
Jacob paused briefly as he removed his gloves, but quickly regained his composure.
"DNA samples have been taken. We should have the results within a week, and then we can identify the deceased."
Exiting the autopsy room, Jacob instinctively checked his phone's notifications.
I knew what he was looking for; around this time, I would usually bombard him with messages, mostly nagging him to take care of himself. But it had been days since I last sent any.
The notification bar showed only a few promotional messages, nothing else. He clicked his tongue in irritation.
Opening the call log, he saw the thirteen missed calls from me a few days ago. His fingers deftly navigated to my Whatsapp.
Line after line, he scrolled through my messages:
"You never eat properly. The new stomach medicine is in the drawer by the entrance."
"I’ve washed and ironed your shirts. Pick them up when you get back."
"I made dinner for you. Eat it if you like; don’t force yourself if you don’t."
He hadn't replied to any of them. He hated me, as if I were his sworn enemy.
Sometimes, when I merely wanted to chat, he would yell at me, "Do whatever you want! Why do you have to tell me?"
I used to wake up an hour early to make him breakfast, only to see him throw it in the trash as he left. I knew my cooking was terrible, just like me.
The last message was from several days ago.
He couldn't believe it, so he exited and re-entered Whatsapp, refreshing it quickly. Still, no new messages.
He clenched his jaw and rubbed his temples.
Without my harassment, shouldn't he be happier?
