Elena's eyes snapped open.
Fluorescent lights burned above her harshly. The white ceiling stretched endlessly above her head.
Her body felt uncomfortable, too light and foreign. Her limbs didn't respond the way they should and her skin felt different against the sheets.
"Mrs. Hart? You're awake. You've been unconscious for days."
Mrs. Hart?
Elena's blood went cold.
She clawed at the sheets, gasping.
Her voice sounded strange, hoarse and not her voice.
Not the voice she had heard in her head for twenty-eight years.
"Where am I?" Her throat burned.
"What happened?"
"You were in a car accident, Mrs. Hart,On the bridge. Your car crashed through the guardrail. You're lucky it didn't fall into the river."
Car accident?
Elena shook her head.
No, that wasn't right.
She remembered the terrace, the balcony and the cold air.
The champagne glass shattering against marble. Marcus's cold eyes and Sophia's cruel smile. Most importantly the fall.
"No. I wasn't driving." Her voice rose in confusion.
"I was at my anniversary party. I fell from the terrace,Into the river."
"Mrs. Hart, please calm down. Your vitals are spiking."
"No, I'm not hart,what's going on -"
Elena shouted
"Mrs. Hart, I'm going to call the doctor."
"Mirror." Elena's voice cracked. "I need a mirror."
The nurse hesitated. "Mrs. Hart, you really should rest-"
"NOW!"
The nurse flinched before she hurried to the bathroom, returning with a small hand mirror. Her hands trembled as she handed it over.
Elena took it,her fingers shook violently as she raised it to her face.
The woman staring back at her was not Elena Voss.
She has honey brown hair, that was tangled and matted against her forehead.
Soft hazel eyes, not the striking green Elena had known her entire life.
Higher cheekbones and thinner lips. Everything was different. Everything was wrong.
"Who is this?" Her voice cracked.
"Who is this face?"
The nurse paled.
"Mrs. Hart, please. You're Vivian Hart. You've been Vivian Hart for twenty-six years. The accident must have caused some memory loss."
Vivian Hart.
The name tasted foreign on her tongue but something sparked in her fractured memory.
She had heard it before.
Elena's mind raced at what was happening.
How did she become someone else?
She remembered wishing someone would save her. In that dark moment before the water swallowed her, she had prayed to survive.
Never in her wildest dream did she expect a body swap to become someone else.
The door burst open and a doctor rushed in, followed by two nurses.
"Mrs. Hart, I'm Dr. Reeves. You're experiencing severe disorientation. We need to run some tests-"
His words didn't reach her ears.
Elena stared past him, at the wall, at nothing.
Her mind was spinning, trying to grasp the impossible. She remembered dying not this cases.
Who is this woman she swapped with?
Ste was confused now n someone else's body. Someone else's life.
The irony was almost too cruel to bear. The woman who'd been sleeping with her husband, who'd pushed her to her death, was whose best friend she now inhabited.
Elena let out a sound. A laught and half sob .
"Mrs. Hart? Can you hear me?"
Dr. Reeves leaned closer.
Elena blinked, the room came back into focus.
The doctor's face, the nurses behind him and the machines beeping steadily.
She opened her mouth to speak, nothing came out but tears.
Not the quiet, dignified tears she'd cried on the balcony.
These were ugly, uncontrollable sobs that racked her entire body. Everything she have been keeping within herself came out in tears, her marriage, divorce, the betrayal and her death.
She cried for herself.
The doctor's expression softened.
"You need to rest for now."
Elena nodded weakly as she let the nurses adjust her pillows, they lowered her back onto the bed but she didn't close her eyes.
The television mounted on the wall caught her attention.
A funeral.
Elena Voss funeral was held on live.
The camera panned across the cemetery, dozen of people in black pretending to mourn.
Elena saw through them. She knew who was real and who was pretending.
Marcus stood near the grave with dark sunglasses. His hands clasped behind his back. He looked like a man at a business meeting not a funeral.
Sophia was beside him. Her hand on his arm, her face hidden behind a black veil, Elena could see the smile she was trying to hide.
They won, they killed her and now they were celebrating.
Elena's chest tightened with anger .
Then the camera shifted.
A man stood apart from the crowd, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs, his tie undone.
Alexander.
Elena's heart clenched. Her childhood best friend. The only person who truly loved her.
The boy who'd confessed his feelings when they were seventeen. The man she'd ignored. The man who had warned her about Marcus.
Now he was the only one mourning her.
"I'm so sorry." She whispered to the screen.
"I'm so sorry I didn't listen."
Alexander wiped his eyes and stepped forward. He placed a single white rose on her coffin. His lips moved, forming words she couldn't hear.
Tears streamed down her face. But these were different. Grateful tears.
She wasn't alone. Someone had loved her and still loved her.
The doctor sighed and turned off the television. "You need to rest, Mrs. Hart."
The nurses exchanged worried glances.
"Such a tragedy," one whispered.
"Dying on her anniversary like that. People are saying someone pushed her."
Elena's eyes narrowed.
They weren't wrong.
she would make them pay.
She had a second chance.
She didn't know how or why.
She didn't understand the impossible thing that had happened to her but she would use this second chance wisely.
She was no longer Elena Voss. Elena Voss was dead and buried in that cemetery.
She was Vivian Hart now. Sophia's best friend. A woman with a new face, a new body, a new life.
And she was going to use every single piece of it to destroy them.
Marcus. Sophia. Catherine.
They'd taken everything from her. Now she would take everything from them.
She turned to the mirror on the bedside table. The stranger's face stared back at her. Hazel eyes. Honey-brown hair and high cheekbones.
"They won't see what's coming for them"
