Chloe’s words hung in the air for a second too long.

The young woman, Britney, stepped forward slightly, offering a polite, practiced smile. She didn’t look nervous. If anything, she looked like she’d already decided she belonged here.

“It’s nice to finally meet you, Mr. Blackridge,” she said respectful. “I’m Britney. Rose’s niece.”

I kept my expression neutral. “I wasn’t told anyone was coming.”
