I stared at Britney on the arm of the chair, the way she smiled. My brain was scrambling for the right words.

"Wow," I said, voice too sharp. “That’s… that’s great. I mean...congratulations. I guess. I didn’t even know you were with anyone.”

“I wasn’t," she said, still smiling.

“What?” I raised an eyebrow.

“I wasn’t in a relationship,” she repeated quietly. “It wasn’t like that.”

“Okay, then…" I moved forward on the couch without meaning to. "when are you planning to tell the father? He should know. Whoever he is.”

Britney tilted her head slightly, considering me.

“I was hoping you could do that for me.”
