There was another way, though, and that was one that did not give the pup the opportunity to slowly go through the first change, lessening its discomfort. That was more powerful and was usually reserved for when an Alpha needed to force a grown wolf into their secondary state for some reason or another, but Sharon had also heard it done to stubborn pups.
