As I stood amongst the crowd in the big hall, I realized how much the host, René Dubois, fifty five today, had spent so much just to have his birthday party appear as grand as he wanted it to be.

And of course, he spotted me the moment I stepped in.

"Leo!" René's voice boomed over the music. He laughed so hard and dragged me into a hug that could crush ribs. "You came. I thought you'd send me one of your assistants instead. What an honor!"

"Don't be dramatic." I replied, maintaining a tight-lipped smile. "You're a friend. Why wouldn't I be here?"
