The SUVs rattled against bushes, fast but not enough to reduce the thump in my heart. How could I be so slow? How was I so slow to put the pieces together?

And I put an innocent woman in danger.

Guilt clawed at my chest like a living thing, tearing through the thin fabric of my composure. Every breath felt heavier, soaked with the gutwrenching fear that was almost knocking me out.

“Faster!” I screamed at the man driving.

“We're almost there,” he retorted back as he accelerated.
