On Children's Day, my husband William Thompson said he would take our daughter to the biggest amusement park.
Due to a business trip, I couldn’t join them.
In the morning, during a video call with my adorable daughter, I promised to buy her favorite princess dress.
But that evening, I received a call from the hospital, informing me that my daughter had been in a severe car accident and was now lying on her deathbed.
"Your daughter has been in a serious car accident and needs emergency surgery. Only Director William, who is on leave, can perform it! But we can't reach him."
Frantically, I dialed my husband William's number, finally getting through after several attempts.
Instead of William, his assistant, Olivia Taylor, answered in a cold, haughty tone.
"William is busy. What do you need?"
"Please, let me speak to William! Our daughter had a car accident; only he can save her!"
But then William’s irritated voice came on the line. "I'm busy right now, don’t bother me. Olivia, hang up the phone!"
I pleaded through tears. "William, do you know your daughter is about to die?"
But he responded with disdain, "Damn it! How could you curse your own daughter like that just to get me?"
Seeing this, Olivia mimicked William's attitude and said to me: "Ava, I hope you stop making a scene. William and I have important matters to attend to! Unlike you, who spends all day worrying if your husband is cheating! By the way, I remember your daughter Sophia bought me ice cream this afternoon and she seemed perfectly fine! She's ten years old, not an idiot; she'll be fine!"
The line went dead with a ruthless beep.
In the early hours, I caught the nearest flight to the hospital.
After a night of tossing and turning in worry, I finally saw my daughter, covered in blood and bruises from the accident.
Her entire body was wrapped in bandages, her brows furrowed in pain, yet she kept murmuring: “Daddy, where did you go? Don’t leave me! I’m so scared.”
Each of her cries broke my heart, making me feel as though my heart would leap out of my chest.
"The patient's condition is critical, with widespread infection. Only the director can perform the surgery that might save her. Mrs. Thompson, if you can't reach William, your daughter might not survive."
My daughter struggled in agony in the emergency room, her cries becoming weaker. Each of her cries seemed to torture my soul.
I tried calling William and Olivia, only to find that I had been blocked.
In my anxiety, I decided to approach Olivia. I turned to her social media, only to find she had just posted an update.
A photo of William, a cat, and part of her face.
"Thanks to your dad for helping me search all night! Finally found my lost daughter—Sarah the kitten!"
In the photo, William’s hand affectionately stroked the cat’s head, as if they were a family.
The post was tagged with a location: The French Laundry, a high-end restaurant.
I immediately went to the restaurant based on the location and saw William and Olivia having a candlelit dinner together.
