Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Chapter Prologue

The restaurant was full with customers today, Emma was having a hard time getting the orders correctly without getting it all mixed up. After giving the orders to Eric who was in charge of the kitchen, she decided to rest for awhile.

“Looks like someone is worked up today.” Sarah said while coming towards her. Sarah had been Emma’s friend for a year and half.

“Tell me about it.” Emma replied while wiping the sweat from her face.

“It seems like everyone decided to eat out today all of a sudden.”

“At least its best for business” Sarah said and they both laughed.

They turned towards the direction of the window after hearing the sounds of sirens.

“Isn’t that the cops?” Emma asked.

“I wonder what’s up this time.” Sarah replied.

“Why don’t we go check it out.”

So they both walked back into the restaurant and noticed two police officers walk into the restaurant asking for someone but they couldn’t hear who it was, and then the manager came out of his office to meet them.

While they talked, the manager points towards their direction, they were both shocked and wondered why he was pointing to them but they didn’t show it, the officers said a thank you and started towards them.

“ Good day, are you Emma Russell? “ they asked.

“I am, how may I help you?”

“A Mercedes car was hit by a truck about an hour ago and on identifying the victims, we found their phones and ID with their names on it and looking through their contacts on their phones we came across your text where you were wishing them a safe trip earlier today, so being the last person who contacted them and having the same surname, we realized you were a relative.”

Emma was already in tears and struggling internally not to believe what she was hearing right now.

“ So, what are you trying to say? “ she asked already frustrated.

“We are sorry ma’am, the couple died on the spot but the little boy survived and was rushed to the hospital. He’s in a critical condition.”

Emma couldn’t believe her ears, but her body was already failing her terribly, because she could hardly even hear what the police officer was saying anymore and then darkness was the only thing Emma could see.

Emma was dropped off by a taxi at St John's memorial hospital. She walked right into the building and headed towards the receptionist, who looked like she was in her early thirties.

She said,

“Hi. I’m Emma Russell, please do you have a patient named Raymond Russell?”

The lady looked through her computer and then back at Emma and said,

“Yes. He's currently in the ICU.”

“Okay. If you don’t mind, may I know the doctor handling his case?” Emma asked, and the lady directed her to the doctor’s office.

On reaching the doctor’s office, Emma knocked on the door and she heard a “Come in” by a deep masculine voice.

She walked in and saw a male doctor who should be in his mid thirties with dark brown hair and hazel eyes.

For the record, he was handsome for a doctor. He gave a polite smile on seeing Emma which she returned. He stood up from his seat and extended his hand to Emma and she took it.

“Hi, you must be Emma Russell. I’m doctor Steven, it’s nice to meet you.” He said and Emma replied with a,

“Thank you.”

He offered her a seat which she accepted.

“So, about the patient named Raymond Russell, I'm guessing you’re his sibling?”

“Yes. I’m his elder sister.”

“Okay.” he said.

“To be honest with you, your brother is in a very critical condition. He had some broken bones and lost a lot of blood.”

Emma was already on the verge of crying but she held back her tears as the doctor went on speaking.

“That’s not all Miss Russell. He also got his heart punctured and I'm sorry to say this but, if he doesn’t get operated on as soon as possible, he'll die.”

Emma couldn’t hold it anymore, she started to cry her eyes out as she doesn’t even want to imagine herself losing her only family left.

The doctor gave her some time to gain her composure. Emma sniffled back her tears and picked up the courage to ask the doctor what was required for the surgery and he replied,

“Well, his heart was really damaged and I don’t think it would be easy getting it to function like it used to, so I'll suggest the best option, and that would be to undergo a heart transplant as soon as possible.”
