I thought about the specific and particular quality of a thing you were approaching from the outside, the way you could map the edges of a shape before you could see its interior, the way the edges told you something about the interior without telling you everything, the way you could be certain that the interior existed and had a specific geometry without yet being able to describe the geometry.
