Clara went home and got so angry that she scolded Miranda to release her anger.

Miranda knew her humble status, and the finger marks on Clara's face meant she must have been upset after being beaten up. If being scolded by her could make her feel less angry, Miranda was willing to accept it.

John came home from playing pokers, and Clara was having a fit. John was a bit surprised that there was an extra person in the house.

When he saw the swelling on Clara's face, he mistook it for Miranda.
