‘‘What are you up to?’’ I yelled as I leaned back against the tree where Arnold put me down from carrying me on his shoulder. ‘‘What are you trying to do to me?’’

Why haven't they arrived at this point? I was under the impression that as soon as Leina saw the photo that I had sent to her, they would come and look for us. Why are they taking such a long time?

Arnold didn't answer me. His gaze moved down from my face, first focusing on my eyes, then moving on to my lips, as if conducting an examination of me.
