I knew something was off the second Kendra looked at me like that.
It wasn’t her usual teasing look — it was sharper, searching. The kind that made my stomach twist.
Jaxon must’ve noticed too. I caught him glancing at us from the couch, his game controller forgotten in his hand. Ezra was still yelling at the TV, totally unaware, but Jaxon’s eyes stayed on me. I gave him a small, nervous smile — the kind that said, It’s fine, even though it wasn’t.
“Nothing,” Kendra said quickly when Jaxon asked what was wrong. “Just need to talk to your sister for a sec.”
