The house was quiet—too quiet.
All the lights downstairs were off, except for the thin glow spilling from the hallway nightlight. I could hear the faint hum of the fridge, the soft whir of the ceiling fan in the living room, and upstairs—silence.
Everyone was asleep. Or so I hoped.
My phone buzzed again.
Jaxon: “You still up?”
I smiled to myself. He couldn’t possibly mean it… right?
I typed back quickly. “You’re supposed to be sleeping. Big day tomorrow.”
His reply came almost instantly. “Can’t sleep. Thinking about you.”
I rolled my eyes, but my heart was already racing. “You’re impossible.”
“You love that about me.”
