For the first time in what felt like years, even though it had only been days, I held both of my children in my arms. My boy—stolen from me before I could memorize the shape of his tiny face,and my girl,my anchor when I thought I’d lose my mind,lay bundled together against my chest. Their little breaths rose and fell like music.
I could breathe again.
“Mine,” I whispered, kissing the tops of their heads, inhaling that sweet baby scent that could break the hardest heart. My voice cracked, and I didn’t care who heard it. “You’re mine. Both of you.”
