The heavy metal pipe hit the side of Claire's head with a sick crack

Claire's hands let go of my throat at once. She let out a strange, wet gasp as the hit threw her off me, and her body crashed hard into the main control desk before it slumped onto the wet concrete floor.

I rolled onto my side, holding my throat, and coughed hard as cold air rushed back into my lungs. It burned like fire. For a few seconds, all I could see were white spots and red flashing light, and all I could hear was the siren screaming in my ears.
