I sat the kids down and told them exactly what Serena had advised me to do. They listened and gradually, I brought up the sleepover. Just like we planned, I gave them all of the things I wouldn’t normally give it to them.

“Mom, are you doing this because you’re trying to distract us?” Aiden perked up and I almost choked on my drink.

“Of course not, silly. Your 10th birthday is next week. Of course I’m going to spoil you until then. Have you forgotten about our birth week tradition?”

“No but we haven’t done that in a while. We thought we were too old for that.”...
