Mateo’s POV

I make it three blocks before I turn back.

My apartment is in the opposite direction, but my feet carry me toward the gym in Sterling & Associates’ building basement. Maybe I can sweat this out, run until my legs give out and my mind stops circling back to the way Promise looked at me through that glass wall.

The executive gym is empty at seven PM. I change quickly, avoiding my reflection in the locker room mirror, and spend forty minutes on the treadmill trying to outrun thoughts of him. It doesn’t work. Nothing works. Every stride pounds his name through my head: Promise, Promise, Promise.
