Kai found me in the empty cabana nearest the far lagoon, the one screened by dense palms and almost never used before noon. I had spent the morning moving between shaded paths and quiet corners, heart slamming every time a tall figure in linen appeared at the edge of my vision. L. Voss, the senior partner who once told me I was too tightly wound for the partnership track, was somewhere on this island. The knowledge sat like a live wire under my skin. The silver bracelet felt heavier than it had the day before.
