My head banged hard, a sharp, ringing pain exploding behind my eyes. For a second, the whole room tilted violently. My breath caught in my throat, trapped, as if someone had punched me straight in the chest. My heart stuttered, then slammed against my ribs so violently I thought it might crack them open.

I slowly glanced up at Helene, my voice barely a whisper, trembling and broken.

“Wait… what do you mean?” My lips felt numb. “Like… are you trying to say… you… you did that to my grandma?”
