Just then, a soft knock came at the door. It was hesitant, not urgent, but enough to pull my attention away. I turned to see Kate standing in the doorway, her eyes filled with worry and a touch of relief when they landed on Bella. She bowed to greet me and then returned her gaze to Bella.

“Kate,” I said, acknowledging her with a slight nod. I knew why she was here; to see Bella.

“I heard Bella isn’t feeling fine,” Kate said, her voice low but filled with emotion. She glanced between Bella and me as if seeking permission to come in.
