As Lucian stood protectively by my side, I knew I had to confront my adoptive parents alone. I could feel his worry and hesitation, so I looked up, forcing a small smile to reassure him.

“I need to talk to them privately,” I said softly, glancing at my parents who stood stiffly across the room, avoiding my gaze.
