The woman returned as I was about to stand up, her eyes fixed on me with a fierce intensity. “I wouldn’t advise that,” she said, her tone leaving no room for argument. “Your feet may not be able to carry your body yet. And, I’d hate for anything to happen to you or the baby.”

The baby.

The words hit me like a bolt of lightning. A baby? Was she talking about me? The sickening realization washed over me, the memory of the agonizing pain that had plagued me, the constant nausea that had left me weak and depleted. It was all starting to make sense.
