The kitchen smelled of fried pie. Carina reached out and grabbed one. Her mother slapped her hand.

“That is your fourth. Move the dishes. And behave for our visitor. Do not be mean.”

The doorbell rang. “They must be here. Let’s do this,” her mother said, walking to open it.
