I’ve been in this house for three weeks without him. The silence now feels like a third body in the bed. His scent is already fading from the pillows, and every night it became harder to pretend the marriage was something warm.

We don’t touch the way we used to. Not that we ever really did.

He always kissed me like he was late for something and acted like he was afraid of wanting me too much. Or maybe of me wanting him too much.

I used to think marriage would be warmth. Two bodies learning each other. But with Charles it has always been duty.
