Everything was good until it wasn’t.

I was at work when it happened.

Or she happened, I mean.

I caught her scent before I saw her.

Jamie.

Like bad perfume and old lies. I was already gritting my teeth by the time I turned the corner and saw her leaning against the stone wall outside the east courtyard, like she belonged here.

“Micah,” she said with that sugary voice that used to work on me. “You look... tense.”

Fuck her voice was like a pencil to my ears. Or someone frilling right in my head. All the times I ever listened to it must’ve made me immune.
