“You’re not crying because of me,” Adele says sweetly, crouching in stilettos that cost more than the gallery’s chandelier. “You’re just shy, aren’t you, darling?”
The toddler stares at her with wide, confused eyes… then lets out a high-pitched scream and bolts. Full-on, arms-flapping, cartoon-style sprint across the gallery.
Adele stands there frozen with parted lips. Heads turn. A few guests try to hide their laughter. Her face twitches.
She straightens her back and brushes imaginary dust off her pristine cream dress. “Brat,” she mutters through a clenched jaw.
She hears a throat clear behind her. She already knows who it is.
